⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Son Gohan
Age: 16
Canon: Dragon Ball
Canon Point: Right after Gohan returns to Earth, before he goes off to fight Super Buu.

Background: this will be far better than anything I could produce.

Personality:

As a small child, Son Gohan (henceforth referred to as just "Gohan") was a shy and awkward child, almost the polar opposite of his energetic and outgoing father in many ways. Whereas Goku always loved being in the middle of things, finding trouble wherever it may be, Gohan is the opposite, preferring to keep a low profile and stay out of things. He lacks his father's intense fighting spirit, instead attempting to be a studious, intellectual child who will one day become a scholar as per his mother's wishes. He's very devoted to this goal, investing heavy amounts of time to do all the studying and schoolwork he was expected to do by his mother. He's also very emotional, prone to crying at the smallest upset.

But in his heart, Gohan was still a fighter; despite how much he tried to avoid trouble, trouble always found him. He believed himself to be weak and incapable of doing much at first, but after his father's death at the hands of his uncle Raditz, he began training in martial arts and combat courtesy of his father's former rival, Piccolo. His newfound mentor quickly noticed Gohan's potential power and pushed him hard, day and night without mercy. He quickly found himself involved in many battles to determine not only the safety of the Earth, but the entire universe. He'd faced off against the likes of Vegeta, Frieza, and the Androids, before finally becoming strong enough to inherit his father's legacy as protector of Earth and become the one to stop Cell.

Seven years later, after the threat of Cell had passed and the Earth had seemingly achieved peace, Gohan had largely given up fighting, devoting himself again to his studies as Chi-Chi had wished. Gohan has now become a handsome, intelligent young man. He's mostly outgrown his shyness and crybaby nature, becoming more mature and self-assured. But his awkwardness has remained, and in some senses even became more pronounced as he tries to reconcile his attempts at leading a normal, peaceful life with his not-so-normal abilities and his desire to protect the peace. He now goes to Orange Star High School, going to school with other kids his age. He's soft-spoken and kind, and harbors a deep desire to protect the innocent and dispense justice, just as his father did before him. He attempts to juggle a double life of sorts, trying to keep his nature as one of the strongest fighters on the planet separate and a secret from his ordinary school life. But despite his incredible intelligence, he's dense and unaware of many of the things that comprise ordinary life. Even things like what to do on a date or how to talk his way out of a sticky situation are well beyond his normal ability, and that's when his awkward nature truly shows itself.

One of Gohan's most prevalent and defining traits is the strength his emotions carry, especially his rage and anger. As a child, Gohan was very anxious, shy, and easily frightened. He was also remarkably weak, enough so that he was disregarded by everyone as being any sort of potential threat. But soon they discovered that when Gohan explodes with rage, his power skyrockets to unbelievable heights. His emotions gave rise to greater power for him. Now grown up, Gohan isn't the type to get scared and run away like he used to, capable of carrying a calm, brave front now. But his explosive rage hasn't faded, and though he does a better job of controlling his anger than he used to, it doesn't take much to piss him off. Just hurt or threaten someone he cares about and you'll be facing trouble real quick.

Gohan, unlike his father, and unlike many members of the Saiyan race, is not one to act on impulse. He's very reactive in many of the things he does, taking a wait and see approach and trying to react accordingly instead of attempting to get the upper hand in the situation. This goes hand in hand with his passive nature, but it often works against him. Piccolo once notes that in a fight, Gohan tends to try and anticipate his opponents instead of engaging them head on and use his strength and skill to his advantage. While such a tactic does often eventually work in his favor as he's able to conceive effective counters and solutions to his problems using his intelligence, it also leaves him at a huge disadvantage until that moment happens.

Despite his peaceful nature and his lack of fighting spirit, Gohan harbors a strong desire to be a defender and protector of the peace just as his father was. In order to protect his dual life that he wanted to lead, Gohan conceived a secret identity, taking on the mantle of a costumed super hero known as the Great Saiyaman. He uses this identity to safely combat criminals in the city using his powers without exposing his civilian identity. While in this disguise, Gohan takes on an exaggerated "heroic" personality, making hammy speeches about justice and striking ridiculous poses that would make the Ginyu Force blush with envy. The personality he exhibits is a combination of classic superheroes as well as how Gohan views his father, who he sees as a pure and righteous hero, and a true defender of earth. Gohan even states at one point that he was using Goku as inspiration for some of his lines, remarking that he made it seem so easy.

All in all, Gohan is a defender at his very core. He doesn't want to fight if he doesn't have to, and he definitely doesn't want to kill anybody, no matter how evil they are. But he knows that he has the strength to protect everything he cares about, and if he needs to step up and defend that, whether it's his friends, his family, or the planet he calls home, he'll do so, without the slightest bit of hesitation. To him, that's what it means to be a hero.

Abilities:

Gohan is a hybrid human, containing the cells of both earthlings and of the Saiyan race in his genetic makeup. Saiyans are an alien race from a faraway planet known as Planet Vegeta, known as proud, elite warriors with extreme strength and combat prowess. Due to his Saiyan heritage, he possesses a natural affinity for ki-based flight and ki-based energy manipulation, as well as superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. Like all Saiyans, he also possessed a unique trait colliquially known as a "Zenkai boost", which allows his body's natural strength to exponentially grow upon recovering from injuries due to the Saiyan physiology's ability of naturally adapting; in essence, the greater the damage received, the larger the gain.

It's unclear exactly why this is the case, but it's stated multiple times in canon that Saiyan genes mixed with that of an Earthling produces a human with capabilities and potential greater than that of purebloods. It's unknown if this would be the case were a Saiyan to mate with a different race, but it proves to be true with all three half-Saiyans we see, and is especially true in the case of Gohan. Gohan is repeatedly stated to possess deep, latent strength and limitless potential, even invoking the fear and disgust of Vegeta when the Saiyan prince first encountered him as a child during his attempted invasion of planet Earth. Even though this is a trait common for hybrid Saiyans, the sheer scale of which Gohan is capable seems to be unique to him. Due to his potential being considered limitless, we don't know the extent that Gohan's power can truly reach at this time, but even far later in the canon when characters like Goku and Vegeta attain godlike power, they still seem to believe that Gohan could in theory surpass them with proper training. When pushed to extreme emotions, Gohan constantly displays the ability to surpass himself and reach new heights.

Over the course of the series, Gohan has developed and attained several powerups, thereby increasing his power even further. At the tender age of nine, he achieved the ability to go Super Saiyan after a grueling year long training session with his father, making him the youngest Super Saiyan in history at the time. His mastery over the form was so great that he attained perfect control over his energy output and consumption, thereby suffering no physical strain whatsoever while in the form and thus only have the benefits of the form. He was also the first person to achieve Super Saiyan 2, also at the age of nine while under extreme emotional duress during his battle with Cell. Finally, he's had his potential unleashed by Old Kai, allowing him to use the full extent of his dormant capabilities. The release of this form (commonly known as "Mystic" Gohan or "Ultimate" Gohan) allowed him to completely dominate Super Buu, a foe who had singlehandedly wiped out all life on Earth and couldn't be taken down by Piccolo, Goku, or Gotenks, and later in the Dragon Ball Super series Gohan was shown able to overpower Goku even in his Super Saiyan Blue state. It's also theoretically possible for Gohan to combine his Super Saiyan form with his unleashed potential, though we've yet to see what power he's capable of in such a state (and thus wouldn't be explored unless we do get that information). To put into perspective how powerful Gohan is capable of being at his current canon point, his father's energy output as a Super Saiyan was measured at 3000 kili (which is roughly equivalent to 3 Decillion Joules), and his power as a Super Saiyan 3 is eight times that, at 24,000 Kili/24 Decillion Joules. And Gohan, after unleashing his potential, outclasses that.

Gohan is also a skilled martial artist, having been trained in both the Turtle School by his father (as well as other associated members over the course of his relationships with them) and the Demon School by Piccolo, creating a blend of the two fighting styles that's all his own. List of Gohan's many techniques. His fighting style usually involves speedy barrages of strikes, weaving in his various ki-based energy blasts for maximum effectiveness. His sharp wit and intelligence allows him to adapt in battle on the fly, quickly creating counters to deal with troublesome foes.

As stated above, Gohan is also skilled in ki manipulation. He's able to mold his ki into energy based attacks such as the Kamehameha and Masenko, focus it to increase his power, or even exert it on his surroundings to create invisible shockwaves in the air, enabling him to blow away weaker opponents or even stop and redirect projectiles such as missiles.

Finally, although he could hardly be called a master of any sort, Gohan displays proficiency in swordsmanship. As a child during his training with Piccolo, Gohan was given a sword to fend for himself with against the dinosaurs that roamed the wastelands. Furthermore, when he was taken to the Planet of the Kais by Shin, he begins training with the Z Sword to master its power and does so quite skillfully before the blade is broken.

Alignment: Sosyne. Gohan is a character who, time and again within the story of Dragon Ball, is characterized by both his level head in the thick of battle and also his boundless rage. He lacks the hotheadedness that many Saiyans possess due to the way he was raised as well as his own nature, but when he gives into his rage is when his power truly reaches its peak. He keeps a cool head most of the time, but it doesn't take much to push him over the edge and anger him.

Other:
Obviously, considering the sheer strength Gohan wields, we'll need to discuss nerfs. I'd like his actual physical strength to remain the same, meaning he'd still be capable of incredible feats of strength such as lifting impossibly heavy objects or causing property damage with a single punch. But I would lessen the impact and power of his actual abilities to bring them more in line with early canon capabilities, or perhaps put him more on level with your typical overpowered JRPG protag. Basically, if he fights someone, he won't accidentally kill them with a single punch or vaporize them and the island as well with an energy beam.

Emotion Sample:
"Hey, leave the girl alone."

There are some who would say that Gohan should really learn to keep his nose out of other people's business. Not for his sake, but for whoever happens to be on the other side of his 'justice'. But he's never exactly been all that good at heeding warnings like that, not one to just stand around and do nothing when he knows there's somebody in trouble. It's that admirable but irritating quality of his that found him in this situation, the only witness to a group of three wannabe gang members trying to have their way with a civilian woman.

"Oh yeah?", one of them spat at him. "What's some scrawny nerd like you gonna do to stop us?"

In all honesty? There was a lot Gohan could do to stop them. But he was concerned about making this into an even bigger scene than it already was. He was really lamenting not changing into his Great Saiyaman costume right about now. At least then he wouldn't have to worry about dealing with the aftermath. For now, he just scowled at these punks.

Another one, a larger fellow, who just so happened to be the one towering over the helpless female, cranes his head cockily in Gohan's direction, smirking. "Heh, fuhgeddabout that loser. Right here's all we need to worry about!" He presses the tip of a knife under the girl's chin. Tears well up in her eyes as she cries out in a panic.

"H-help! Please!"

That one singular moment was enough to set Gohan off. "I said, leave her alone." The air crackled and stirred, heating up as lightning began to arc around him, his temper flaring. He takes a step forward, the pavement beneath his feet immediately shattering, as if an immense weight had suddenly collided with it. One of the punks, reacting with all the fury of a cornered animal, immediately lunged for Gohan--only to be downed in one hit, sent flying into a wall as Gohan nailed him in the stomach with a well-aimed jab.

He turns his sights now to the remaining two, eyes narrowed with a previously unseen ferocity. "Last chance for you to listen to me."

Questions:
If possible, I'd like him to have his transformation watch on him so he can access his Great Saiyaman outfit and deliver JUSTICE to the city of Verens! It needs a resident superhero who's a gigantic loser...
